Government Programs

Much of the work on plain language has been focused on government information. In the US, the Plain Writing Act of 2010 requires the federal government to write in plain language.

Federal agency programs

For a complete list of federal agency plain language programs, the best source is the plainlanguage.gov web site, where a list of all programs and plain language statements from the agencies is kept up-to-date as part of the implementation of the Plain Writing Act.

Other programs with a public focus on plain language and clear communication include:

  • Consumer Financial Protection Bureau – Know Before You Owe
Working on to combine two loan documents,  the Truth in Lending Disclosure and the HUD-1 Settlement Statement, and other federal disclosures into a single, easier-to-use form. This program frequently posts work in progress for public comment.

State and local programs

In the US, 32 states have a plain language program in at least one agency.
