Honoring Karen Sokohl: Advocate, Colleague, and Friend

By the Center for Plain Language Board

Karen SokohlKaren Sokohl joined the Center for Plain Language Board in 2021, eager to serve a three-year term. Her passion for plain language was immediately clear—as was her creative and generous spirit. She was bright, enthusiastic, witty, and always ready to jump in and help. Working with Karen was a joy. She shared ideas for revamping our website, created slide decks, encouraged others, and offered her time and talents freely.

When she became ill, Karen stepped back from active board service but stayed in touch and continued to support the Center when she could. She even joined virtual events when she felt up to it. At those gatherings—and in her emails—she remained warm, funny, and full of optimism. One memorable subject line read: “No, I haven’t been abducted by aliens.” In the summer of 2024, she wrote to say she wasn’t quite ready to return and missed “bringing her energetic and happy contributions” to the group. She signed off: “I remain a plain language advocate (always!) and I’m so grateful for my time on the board and the committee. Thank you for your incredible support!”

Those of us who served with Karen were cheering her on and believed her when she said she was on the mend. It was a shock to learn of her passing on March 11, 2025, after a brave two-and-a-half-year battle with ovarian cancer. Our hearts go out to her family and friends. She is deeply missed.

In honor of Karen’s commitment to plain language, we introduced the Sokohl Award at the 2025 ClearMark Awards. The award recognizes an individual or organization that enthusiastically promotes the use of plain language.

Julie-KS-AwardWe were proud to present the inaugural Sokohl Award to longtime board member Julie Clement. Julie has served as our Treasurer for many years and consistently goes above and beyond to support plain language—well beyond her official role. She is also the President of Clarity, participates in the International Plain Language Federation, leads the workgroup for Part 2 of the ISO Plain Language standard, and teaches several courses in the Plain Language Program at Simon Fraser University. Julie’s tireless efforts and generous spirit truly reflect the values Karen championed.

As we carry Karen’s legacy forward through the Sokohl Award, we remain committed to advancing clear communication. We thank everyone who continues to support the plain language mission Karen held so dear.
