April 23, 2024 – 1:00-2:30 p.m. (EDT)
How can a style guide help you to build a culture of plain language in your workplace? How can it help you deliver services that users understand?
Join our expert panelists for a dynamic discussion.
First, they will share their experiences in developing and implementing style guides. Lara Ghadban of Canada’s Social Security Tribunal will talk about how a style guide can lessen the awful effects of legalese in decisions about who is entitled to public benefits. Brian Lieb will explain how Hennepin County fosters plain language in the delivery of a wide range of public services.
Then we will break into small groups that will allow you to ask questions and discuss the issues around the use of style guides that concern you.
Lara Ghadban manages the Linguistic Services unit at the Social Security Tribunal of Canada. She oversees translation, editing, and plain language. Lara and her team also create and maintain language resources such as writing guides, templates, and cheat sheets. Lara has a degree in trilingual translation and loves all things language.
Brian Lieb is the plain language coordinator for Hennepin County in Minnesota. He developed the county’s plain language program, teaches writing classes, and helped create and currently maintains the county’s writing style guide. Brian has a master’s degree in English with a graduate minor in education.
