As more people use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to interpret health information, legal documents, and other important content, questions remain about accuracy, context, clarity, and language access.

Join the Center for Plain Language for a discussion about the growing role of AI in translation, language access, and plain language communication. Speakers Iris Feinberg and Julie Clement will share research and practical experience from healthcare and legal settings, exploring both the opportunities and limitations of using AI to support clear communication.

Iris Feinberg will present findings from a study comparing qualified in-person medical interpreters with Google Translate’s voice translation feature. The research examined content translated into six languages and analyzed error patterns, contextual loss, and other challenges that can affect understanding.

Julie Clement will discuss her experience using AI to help translate complex legal and regulatory language into plain language. She will explore the benefits and limitations of AI as part of the revision process and share key considerations for communicators working with dense or technical content.

The webinar will conclude with a moderated discussion and audience Q&A.

In this webinar, you’ll learn:

  • How AI translation tools compare to qualified human interpreters
  • Common translation errors
  • How context can be lost during machine translation
  • The opportunities and risks of using AI to simplify legal and regulatory language
  • Practical considerations for using AI responsibly
  • What these findings mean for language access, plain language, and public communication
